TOM MAZZULLO

INVENTIONS


The title of this series of still life drawings refers to the short musical compositions that combine simple individual melodies to form complex harmonies. Many of the drawings use small paper sculptures as the subjects, the forms inspired by geometry, science, nature, esoterica, and other ideas. Some of the still lifes combine three-dimensional paper forms with two-dimensional diagrams, while other drawings incorporate letterforms to play with language and its abstract relationship to reality. The newest of these works are chiaroscuro metalpoint drawings, made of silver, copper, gold, palladium, and  other metals, worked on top of toned casein ground, with white gouache highlights added to enhance the contrast and increase dimensionality.
