TOM MAZZULLO

STILL LIFES


All of my work is done from life, either still life or life drawing, with the still lifes being divided into themes of alphabetical drawings, botanical drawings, wrapped items and twists of paper, and, lately, arrangements of little sculptures called "Inventions". The fruits and vegetables range from traditional single object studies to groups of multiples, scatterings of seeds, and carved, cut, and arranged botanical objects. Some of the drawings incorporate letterforms to play with language and its abstract relationship to reality, while other still lifes combine three-dimensional paper forms with two-dimensional diagrams to explore themes of esoterica, geometry, and history. The newest of these works are chiaroscuro metalpoint drawings, made of silver, copper, gold, palladium, and  other metals, worked on top of toned casein ground, with white gouache highlights added to enhance the contrast and increase dimensionality.
